Ebony Forest Reserve Chamarel

Situated in the village of Chamarel, the Ebony Forest is a nature reserve home to rare endemic birds. It offers spectacular views over the south coast of Mauritius and has several hiking trails perfect for the whole family.

Sublime Point can be reached by either hop on a jeep or take the Ridgeline Trail. Mauritius Paradise Flycatchers can be spotted as you pass through their territory and these inquisitive birds join you on your walk. If you only have time for one walk, we recommend the Ridgeline Trail. It is 1.1 km long and takes about 30 minutes from the Flycatcher Forest to Sublime Point.

Hiking along the Ridgeline trail offers scenic views over the turquoise ocean and Ile aux Benitiers before ending at the Sublime viewpoint. If you continue to Piton Canot peak, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning 360-degree view over Le Morne Brabant, Tourelle du Tamarin, Black River Gorges and more.

While it’s only approximately 556m above sea level, the 7km hike up the mountain usually takes 3-4 hours and it's truly worth doing but it does require some degree of fitness and experience as it’s quite a bit more challenging than you may think by just looking at it. If you do venture up there, be sure to take your camera with you as the views are absolutely magnificent.

The stunning Machabée Viewpoint is in the heart of the Black River Gorges National Park, where some of the best trails meet, all of which offer captivating views of the forested mountain landscape

The Macchabee viewpoint can be reached by following the 10km long Macchabee trail which climbs from Black River visitor centre to Petrin information centre, and marks the highest point of the park. From here, the far-reaching views often include sightings of white-tailed tropicbirds, various dove species, and sometimes the rare pink pigeon. The Macchabée Trail provides a quick and easy hike through this wild region of pitching hills and thick forest and offers a moderate hike of about 3 hours.

Le Pouce Mountain Viewpoint

Situated in the central region of Mauritius, Le Pouce is the third tallest mountain in Mauritius standing at a height of 812 meters.

The mountain is shaped like a thumb, hence the name Le Pouce. This is one of the easiest hikes to do in Mauritius and those who climb to the summit are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the whole island.

From one side, you can see the capital city of Port Louis with its high-rise buildings while the other boasts incredible views over the neighboring mountains flanked by sugarcane fields.

Hiking to Le Pouce Mountain is without a doubt one of the top attractions in Mauritius since the trail is easy to follow and doesn’t require too much strength except towards the “Thumb” part on the top.

The Chamarel waterfall Viewpoint

One of the highest waterfalls in Mauritius can be found in the village of Chamarel which also boasts some of Mauritius’ most scenic views.

Chamarel waterfall is a massive waterfall that plunges from a height of nearly 100 meters. It’s sometimes split into two or three depending on the time of the year.

There are two viewing platforms from which you can see the waterfall. The first one is located on the left side of the parking lot and the other is found upstairs opposite the first viewpoint.

From mildly difficult to very challenging, the trip to the mountain is open to different types of hikers. Whether amateur or professional, it is recommended to hike equipped with helmets, ropes and harnesses.

The hike to the top lasts on average 4-5 hours and it is recommended to wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes, bring water to stay hydrated and some snacks. If you have sun-sensitive skin, don’t forget your hat and sunscreen.

Maconde Peak Viewpoint

Maconde is located on the southwest tip of Mauritius and you’ll be in for a treat if you like cliffs or bird’s eye view of the ocean. This little rocky cliff between Le Morne and Baie du Cap is set on a hairpin bend on the coastal road and is known for its picturesque landscapes and incredible seascapes.
