From July 15th, Mauritius will start its phased lift of the travel restrictions. Borders will be reopened to Mauritians (locals and residents) and tourists travelling in for long stays. One of the many conditions and regulations which came into place following the re-opening of borders is the mandatory quarantine. However, after being struck by the second wave of Covid-19, the borders were closed again and will be reopened as from the 15th of July 2021 in 2 phases.

As from October 2020, Mauritius started its phased lift of the travel restrictions. Borders were reopened to Mauritians (locals and residents) and tourists travelling in for long stays. One of the many conditions and regulations which came into place following the re-opening of borders is the mandatory quarantine.

Why is there a quarantine in Mauritius?

Since the outbreak of the virus in March 2020, Mauritius has taken strict measures to stop the spread of the pandemic within the country. A closure of the borders followed by a total lockdown allowed the country to timely and effectively tackle the COVID19 pandemic within its borders.

One of the reasons Mauritius has been marked COVID-safe is because it had no active local cases for over 21 days and it maintained the status partly due to the 14-day mandatory quarantine upon arrival. Within this quarantine time, the passengers are tested every week for COVID-19. It has been proven that the virus takes up to 2 weeks to manifest symptoms in an individual. Hence, the duration of the quarantine will allow ample time for the identification of anyone who might be a carrier of the virus.

Quarantine in Mauritius

In March 2021, when the second wave of the pandemic hit Mauritius, the island closed its borders as an immediate response to the situation. For the gradual reopening of borders, quarantining measures will be applied for anyone travelling to the country. Quarantine conditions for vaccinated and non vaccinated travellers will differ.

Who is the quarantine mandatory for in Mauritius?

Everyone. Whether you are a returning national or residents, a tourist, here on business or even a diplomat, you will have to go through the mandatory Hotel Quarantine until the end of September 2021. ‘Self quarantine’ or ‘quarantine at home’ is not allowed for travellers to Mauritius (returning locals, residents, tourists) for the time being, although it has been a topic raised to the authorities.

Fully vaccinated travellers will not require a 14-day in room quarantine if their 1st PCR test comes out negative as from October 2021.

Where to quarantine?

The government has concluded agreements with some hotels to turn them into quarantine facilities. 3-star, 4-star and 5-star hotels across the island can be found in the list of hotels available for quarantine. To pre-book your quarantine hotel, you need to visit the MTPA portal using the government approved EK and MK Flights designated dates which can be found on the portal.

However, for fully vaccinated guests, there will be a list of COVID safe hotels made available from which they can book their hotel holiday.
