3-4 Hours Hike at Le Morne Brabant - Mauritius
Hiking at Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most iconic things to do during your stay in Mauritius. For nature lovers and adventurers, Mauritius Attractions offers a half-day hike to Le Morne Brabant which invites you to have an exciting experience at the southern tip of the island. The hike can last between three and four hours, and you will be guided by professionals.
During the hike, you will have the chance to admire stunning views but may even encounter the exquisite seabird, Paille en Queue, as well as stunning native plant species.
As you progress, you will find yourself in the rough, dry mountain terrain, which can be quite challenging. In addition, the temperature will rise, so it is recommended that you bring a hat or cap. It is also important that you are well equipped with sunscreen and good trekking shoes because of the uneven trails.
At some point, you will find a huge basalt rock peak dotted with caves that were once home to escaped slaves. Moving gradually towards the top, you can easily spot the huge metal cross that marks the highest accessible point.
Take the opportunity to marvel at the incredible scenery overlooking Ile aux Bénitiers, Le Morne beach and the spectacular surroundings. It's a sight to remember.
About Le Morne Mountain
The symbolic Le Morne Brabant is a majestic mountain located in the South Western part of Mauritius, on the Le Morne peninsula. The majestic mountain has been declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO since July 6, 2008 to commemorate the Marronage (runaway slaves) legacy in Mauritius. It is believed that the slaves were committing suicide by jumping off the cliff of the mountain due to the very inhumane treatment they suffered.
Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It is a habitat to a very large variety of endemic and narrow-endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutoniana, which is the floral emblem of Mauritius.
