About The Blue Penny Museum
Let’s take a quick detour to Port Louis for some history time and head to the Blue Penny Museum!
Located in the Capital in Mauritius, the Blue Penny Museum, considered one of the most famous museums in Mauritius, is home to precious collections of heritage of Mauritius and displays the rich history of the island. Through the prestigious collections of the museum, visitors will be able to witness the historical and cultural wealth of Mauritius.
The Museum is not only home to two issues of the famous ‘Post Office’ stamp dating back to 1847 but also includes a series of treasures, old marine maps, paintings, sculptures, stamps, engravings and old documents all of them highlighting Mauritian history and culture. The must-see items of the museum remain the unused one penny orange-red stamps and one of the four unused two pence indigo-blue stamps.
Visitors will get to begin with taking a trip to the past into the era of great maritim discoveries in the Indian Ocean; and then proceed to an overview of the three colonial periods in the history of the island. Your visit will then proceed with a glimpse of Port Louis during the 18th and 19th centuries. Next stop is the tale of the history of postal service, including the very first postage stamps issued in Mauritius. The visit will end with the beautiful but tragic story of the mythical couple, Paul and Virginie.
Blue Penny Museum offers general visits, themed visits or guided visits and we are sure that you will definitely find something to your liking at the Blue Penny Museum. You can opt for the general visit for a general tour of the Museum or opt for the themed visit should you wish to spend more time on a particular topic which interests you more.
